My golden female is 2 years old now. At 1.2yrs she contracted parvo, fought it off successfully. We couldn't spay her then. Then at 1.9 she contracted babesios - after 1 month antibiotic/antiprotozoal treatment - her PCR result even after 90 days shows positive for babesios Gibsoni. Clinically she is stable, very active, all CBC normal, weight 32kg. Is it ok to get her surgery to be spayed? Or if we don't what is her cancer risk down the road 3-5 years. Thanks
Also all PCR tests being done at Pet Bitotech Labs, IISC. Bangalore. Can we be confident of their results? I am in Hyderabad, so after blood drawn, it takes 3-4 Days to get results. And we are basing the whole treatment on these results.
Hi Sridhar. There’s also a lab called Vetlesions who does PCR for 6 babesia species. Once a pet is affected with babesiosis, they show a low load of positivity all the time as most of the pets end up having latent infection throughout the life. If her activity levels are normal with no symptoms plus having normal blood work, you can go for surgery as well.
You can postpone surgery for few months. It won’t be a problem. Make sure she is stress free. Babesiois flares up when a pet goes through any kind of stress.
