Dear Dog-lovers, Is it advisable to raise a male and female puppy (Shih Tzu) together? We are OK for the female to have puppies 1 -2 times in its life as it will be healthy for it. But for the rest of the periods in heat, how can we make both puppies comfortable? We are not sure if we want to neuter the puppies as we've had conflicting views on health issues that comes after neutering/ spaying. From google: "Spayed female dogs may have an increased risk of developing urinary tract infections and juvenile or recessed vulvas when spayed before puberty. Urinary mechanism sphincter incompetence, also known as estrogen responsive urinary incontinence, is a common problem in female dogs spayed." We'd be grateful for your guidance here before we adopt the female puppy. Thanks a ton!

Hi, you can keep them together and let them mate occasionally but make sure the pups are from different parents and should not be related. The female should not be mated before 1.5 years of age, as it would be very stressful for her. Managing a male dog in the house with female in estrus can be difficult sometimes so you'll have to be prepared for that. Out of the two you can get the male neutered after a few matings, male surgery is less invasive as compared to spaying.

Female should be operated only after 1-2 estrus cycles, this will reduce the likelihood of her having recessed vulva or developing incontinence.

Thank you very much, Dr Anukarna. Could you let us know any tips to manage the male puppy while the female is in estrus? I thought the female can be company for the male puppy as I work part-time in a wellness center. Is this advisable or is it better to keep only 1 dog at home?

Eat or Pass? 3. Chapatis Chapatis are a staple of an Indian household and are commonly fed to street dogs and pets. It might again come as a shock but wheat chapatis are not healthy options to feed dogs. Wheat Chapatis contain gluten which is not healthy for dogs in the long run. But, you can always feed chapatis made up of other gluten-free alternatives like quinoa and millet. You can also use curd as an additive to your pet's meal for their gut health.
