Chinmayee Doreraj

My 3yr old gsd, shadow is diagnosed with tick fever. I got the PCR done and he tested positive for b. Gibsoni and b. Sp strains. His blood tests are normal except for super low platelet (25k against 145k expected) As per my research on google, the best course is atovaquone and Azithromycin along for gibsoni and imidocarb and berinil for .sp. The vet is currently giving him clivet, doxy and metronidazole as tablets along with 2 liver syrups and 1 platelet syrup, imidocarb and berinil as injections. My research again says the tablets that are currently prescribed are weak and could lead to relapse. I asked the vet but he said this is good enough. Can somebody please help me with second opinion? I strongly believe Azithromycin and atovaquone should be given instead of clivet, doxy and metronidazole. Not to forget prednisolone was prescribed for 5 days. Also my dog is currently active. But I don't think his platelet is fully back, I'm getting it tested today or tomorrow. Thanks.

Hi Chinmayee. As doctor said the triple drug therapy for 21 days is good enough to treat babesiosis. The risk of relapse will always be there no matter what treatment is given as babesiosis is a latent/hidden infection. Berinil and imidocarb come with challenges of side effects.

When I had this with my golden - this was the treatment plan Hey, Check out this post from Sridhar Vootla on kuddle. I have 2 goldens, max and Lexi both 1.8yrs old. 2 months ago Max passed away due to babesios despite aggressive treatment. I got the female PCR tested and she tested +ve for Babesia Vogeli on 7/11. She was clinically stable with normal blood results. Treatment started with 10 days of Rajadox, Clindohat, Glocin, Flagyl, Azithrohat & Atovaquin. CBC was done every 4 days, with normal results. Ra
