I think my dog might have eaten a little of rat poison, what should I do?
I did speak to the vet, he said is he had eaten very small quantity nothing should happen! But I’m worried, can you’ll please give some insights?
Hi sir, initially pet may not show signs of anticoagulant poisoning..It takes 1 to 2 days for Vit K1 and clotting factors in the body to be used up and next few days before signs of poisoning occur due to blood loss..Clinical signs include weakness, depression, increased respiration rate, pale gums, gastrointestinal signs etc...If an anticoagulant rodenticide ingestion occurred within few hours of treatment, the vet may induce vomiting..
For anticoagulant rodenticide treatment includes Vit K, IV fluids, additional supportive care, GI support, antiemetics to reduce vomiting... The active ingredient in the bait packaging could be Zinc or Aluminium phosphide rodenticide or cholecalciferol/ bromethalin..Treatment would be given accordingly...Kindly visit a vet or schedule an appointment with vet for home visit.. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in rat poisoning in dogs..
