Good morning. It could be a sign of ear infection or any issue related to central nervous system. It can also be a sign of irritation due to unknown cause as well. Its best to get him clinically checked once if he continues behaving like this.

Then such imaginary catching is a behavioural issue. Try diverting his mind whenever he does that. But getting him thoroughly examined to rule out an underlying cause from vet is advisable along with seeing a behaviourist.
